Healthy Bangaloreans might go extinct by 2020

Healthy Bangaloreans might go extinct by 2020

K Shiva KumarFirst Published : 26 Nov 2008 for ExpressBuzz

MYSORE: Bangalore will not have any healthy people left in 15 years if the government fails to arrest soaring pollution levels in both urban and rural levels. This grim warning came from Vision Group 2020, a panel comprising of eminent personalities from the state, constituted for making Karnataka a developed state.

In a meeting held in Mysore to devise a New Industrial Policy for the state, representatives from the Vision Group observed that the pollution levels and congestions posed a threat to people even in residential areas which house more than 8,000 small scale industries (SSIs).

Criticising successive governments for failing to shift the SSIs out of the city in a phased manner, the group said that the situation would further worsen as there are already 1.5 lakh SSIs in Bangalore alone. The majority of SSIs located at Ramaiah Industrial area, Jaibharathi, Maruthi, Kamakshi Palya, Peenya industrial area, Hosur Road, K R Puram, Yelahanka and Mysore road are into plating, chemical toning and hard-crome plating. Efforts to shift these hazardous industries have repeatedly failed. The group said that the Industries and Commerce department, Karnataka Industrial Area Development Board and Karnataka State Small Industries Devlopment Corporation should take the blame for this mess as they were supposed to acquire land for shifting the red-category SSIs working in residential areas.

Air pollution levels have also hit alarming levels. Pollution levels are said to be at a record high at Mysore Road. According to pollution board authorities, the Suspended Particulate Matter (SPM) is 305 microgram against a minimum of 140.

Speaking at the meet, former president of Peenya Industrial Association (PIA) A Padmanabha said that many of the industrial areas have no common effluent treatment plants, green belt or buffer zones. He asked the government identify suitable land and shift SSIs out of residential area in phased manner providing suitable land at subsidised rates.

The Vision Group, taking note of alarming situation, said that its immediate aim is to create buffer zones to demark both residential and industrial areas and acquire land to bring down pollution and vehicular traffic pressure inside the city.

Look what happens if you visit Bengaluru

Watching the final moments of yesterday's match was really intersting to see the way M S Dhoni riding on his success once again. It was not just the stroke of success but also planning and execution. The way the England batters were hitting, it was smooth run up towards their first outing. But, our bowlers continuously changed the line and length and brought in variations mixed with off and wide balls to tempt them to strokes, edges and catches. In the scheme of things, the better captaincy prevailed. Once again, this bring forward my favorite topic - do you foresee a comeback for our boy Sreesanthan to the new look team (in style too - look at Ishant!). I doubt very much so, unless and otherwise, all the gods together do some miracles for the prayers and offerings he and his family are doing. It also bring me the question of the disciplined approach which Dhoni is propagating on the field and outside - and whether will he (Sreesanth) ever fit in to the scope of this new execution plan and team.

Interestingly, I was looking at a new section Malayala Manorama has started yesterday - Manorama Newsmaker 2008 - and projecting Sreesanth as one of the contestant amongst sports personalities from Kerala. What has he done after the IPL series last year to be in the news. Of course in a negative way - lot. But, why not give others who really contributed for Kerala Sports and deny them a chance? Even from Cricket, there were more than one good players and performances during the year 2008 which made all Keralaites proud. I couldn't resist writing to them and eagerly waiting for the after effects of it. Let us see if they continue with him or add one more celebrity - Sabareenath to this list. Of course, he too deserve to get a chance. And if more space, Chandramathi too - for all the support and efficiency to escape for such a long time.

One Laptop per child comes to India

One Laptop per child comes to India

New Delhi, Nov 18: Gifting India's 110 million 6-to-12-year-olds a laptop each is the goal of a campaign launched in New Delhi this evening by a global group called 'one laptop per child.' ''For India, we are starting this programme from today,'' OLPC India spokesman Satish Jha told journalists as he spelt out the campaign's 'Give One Get One' sales pitch.

The idea, he said, was to let consumers pay $400-- roughly Rs 20,000-- and get a specially built-- robust, rugged, dust proof, water proof, sun friendly-- laptop while another is sent to a needy child.

The purpose was to give kids a machine that won't stop working no matter someone spills coffee on it or drops it to the floor, he said.

''If you can't get the child to the classroom, let the classroom go to him,'' said Jha. ''At a very small cost, you can place an advanced classroom in the hands of every single child in India.

''We plan to distribute three million XOs in India in the first year of its operations and aim to reach all needy children in India over the next five years,'' said Jha.

He said the laptop dubbed XO was developed by the founder of Media Lab, a department within the School of Architecture and Planning at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

The 'Give One Get One' - G1G1 - programme put together by former MIT professor Nicholas Negroponte was initiated in the US around September 2007.

XO combines the functionalities of a conventional PC or a laptop along with making it child friendly with a slew of applications designed to encourage interactive learning.

It consumes only 1 watt of power and works as a dual-boot system, running both open source and Microsoft applications with internet connectivity options, he said.

Awareness campaign on unsafe injections

Awareness campaign on unsafe injections

Express News Service First Published : 19 Nov 2008 03:15:00 AM IST KOCHI:

SafePoint Trust, a UK-based charity organisation, has launched an intensive campaign to inform the next generation by raising awareness on the dangers of unsafe injections.

The unique multi-pronged media-blitz will have a gamut of communication tools like public awareness messages, films on television and in cinema halls, radio spots and leaflets. The campaign in Kerala which started on Sunday will conclude on Thursday.

Paul Mallins, an independent consultant in Injection Safety and Emergency Response, told reporters here that the campaign in India was unique in many ways as it was comprehensive, tactical and highly visible. The total amount spend for the campaign in India was 7 lakh Euros.

The organisation will be airing a 3-minute film three to four times a day in over 300 cinema halls across the country.

A television commercial of one minute and 30 seconds will also be broadcast on the leading channels and 160 primary radio stations have been booked to broadcast the awareness spots.

The aim of this campaign is to give the next generation a chance, empower them, give them a voice and ensure that all injections are administered safely.

A report of the World Health Organisation (WHO) reveal that 50 percent of all the injections in the developed world are unsafe which would mean that they are performed with reused or non-sterile equipment.

It is unfortunate that at the all-India level, three fourths of the total number of injections delivered are administered with plastic syringes.
