Nakheel scales back projects, announces job cuts

Nakheel scales back projects, announces job cuts
By Saifur Rahman, Business Editor GULF NEWS Published: November 30, 2008

Dubai: Dubai’s real estate master developer, Nakheel, on Sunday said it has made 500 people (15 per cent of its global workforce) redundant while scaling back projects, as the market slump bites into Dubai's fast-growing real estate market.

"Dubai’s master developer, Nakheel, announced on Sunday 30 November 2008 that it was scaling back work on some of its projects and that it has adjusted it staffing requirements accordingly to accommodate the current easing market conditions," a Nakheel statement said.

Nakheel spokesperson described the decision as a responsible action in light of the current global market conditions.

“We have the responsibility to adjust our short term business plans to accommodate the current global environment. The redundancies are indeed regrettable, but a necessity dictated by operational requirements which are in turn dependent on demand,” added the spokesperson.

This is the second biggest confirmed job cut in the UAE so far, and comes after two developers, Damac and Omniyat confirmed a total of 269 - 200 by Damac and 69 by Omniyat.

All the affected employees were provided a redundancy package, which includes outplacement support services to assist in this time of transition.

All other major developers have earlier said they are revising headcount downwards, as business activities in Dubai's real estate has come close to a near halt.

Analysts say this is the beginning of a massive job cut across the real estate market.

"This is not the end, but the beginning and we do not know when it will end," said property analyst Sudhir Kumar, managing director of Realtors' International.

"In a situation like this, when lack of funds cut short economic activities, companies have to tighten their belts.

"We anticipate others will follow suit in announcing more job cuts."

Healthy Bangaloreans might go extinct by 2020

Healthy Bangaloreans might go extinct by 2020

K Shiva KumarFirst Published : 26 Nov 2008 for ExpressBuzz

MYSORE: Bangalore will not have any healthy people left in 15 years if the government fails to arrest soaring pollution levels in both urban and rural levels. This grim warning came from Vision Group 2020, a panel comprising of eminent personalities from the state, constituted for making Karnataka a developed state.

In a meeting held in Mysore to devise a New Industrial Policy for the state, representatives from the Vision Group observed that the pollution levels and congestions posed a threat to people even in residential areas which house more than 8,000 small scale industries (SSIs).

Criticising successive governments for failing to shift the SSIs out of the city in a phased manner, the group said that the situation would further worsen as there are already 1.5 lakh SSIs in Bangalore alone. The majority of SSIs located at Ramaiah Industrial area, Jaibharathi, Maruthi, Kamakshi Palya, Peenya industrial area, Hosur Road, K R Puram, Yelahanka and Mysore road are into plating, chemical toning and hard-crome plating. Efforts to shift these hazardous industries have repeatedly failed. The group said that the Industries and Commerce department, Karnataka Industrial Area Development Board and Karnataka State Small Industries Devlopment Corporation should take the blame for this mess as they were supposed to acquire land for shifting the red-category SSIs working in residential areas.

Air pollution levels have also hit alarming levels. Pollution levels are said to be at a record high at Mysore Road. According to pollution board authorities, the Suspended Particulate Matter (SPM) is 305 microgram against a minimum of 140.

Speaking at the meet, former president of Peenya Industrial Association (PIA) A Padmanabha said that many of the industrial areas have no common effluent treatment plants, green belt or buffer zones. He asked the government identify suitable land and shift SSIs out of residential area in phased manner providing suitable land at subsidised rates.

The Vision Group, taking note of alarming situation, said that its immediate aim is to create buffer zones to demark both residential and industrial areas and acquire land to bring down pollution and vehicular traffic pressure inside the city.

Look what happens if you visit Bengaluru

Watching the final moments of yesterday's match was really intersting to see the way M S Dhoni riding on his success once again. It was not just the stroke of success but also planning and execution. The way the England batters were hitting, it was smooth run up towards their first outing. But, our bowlers continuously changed the line and length and brought in variations mixed with off and wide balls to tempt them to strokes, edges and catches. In the scheme of things, the better captaincy prevailed. Once again, this bring forward my favorite topic - do you foresee a comeback for our boy Sreesanthan to the new look team (in style too - look at Ishant!). I doubt very much so, unless and otherwise, all the gods together do some miracles for the prayers and offerings he and his family are doing. It also bring me the question of the disciplined approach which Dhoni is propagating on the field and outside - and whether will he (Sreesanth) ever fit in to the scope of this new execution plan and team.

Interestingly, I was looking at a new section Malayala Manorama has started yesterday - Manorama Newsmaker 2008 - and projecting Sreesanth as one of the contestant amongst sports personalities from Kerala. What has he done after the IPL series last year to be in the news. Of course in a negative way - lot. But, why not give others who really contributed for Kerala Sports and deny them a chance? Even from Cricket, there were more than one good players and performances during the year 2008 which made all Keralaites proud. I couldn't resist writing to them and eagerly waiting for the after effects of it. Let us see if they continue with him or add one more celebrity - Sabareenath to this list. Of course, he too deserve to get a chance. And if more space, Chandramathi too - for all the support and efficiency to escape for such a long time.
