My Name is Khan - a review

Movie: My Name Is Khan
Director: Karan Johar
Actors: Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol

A movie which I went in with lots of expectation after the recent debate and action created by political and film personalities.

Shah Rukh Khan playing the lead role “Rizwan Khan” and Kajol as his partner.

Screenplay by Shibani Bhatija is interesting, however at times lagging and a test of patience.

The movie touches the 9/11 myths and tries to capitalise from the anti-muslim agenda emanating against all peace loving Muslims world-wide. Shah Rukh Khan in this movie, I believe is trying to project himself as a character actor and tries to justify the mannerism of patient with autism. He succeeds in it, and may be this is one of the projects where he tries to display a serious role oriented performance than his usual touch of humour here and there. After watching it, I felt, is this an attempt to project himself over Amir Khan as who is the best expressive actor in the field.

Kajol as Mandira, gave a graceful self and bring back the golden touch of beautiful presence and calibre of our beautiful actors of yester years. Her come back is really marvellous and classy.

The child artists Yuvaan Makaar who played as their son Sam (Sameer) played a commendable role in the movie and at times scored even better than both of them. Kudos to this little talent. Tanay Chadda as young SRK also did a great job.

Zarina Wahab as his mother in her short role was superb.

Nice music, especially the background scores and the Tabala beats for the songs Tere Naina, outstanding. It has also a well choreographed dance scene in which SRK trying to dance with his autism disabilities and the emotions projected throughout are excellent.

Sabu Cyril’s set created an outstanding effect of the flood and devastation scenes. However, it could have been a bit more realistically captured by thoughtful camera presentation.

Overall, the movie provides an interesting viewing although it does require lots of patience to sit through certain stages of it. Those who go to movies for pure entertainment purpose may stay out of it. This is a serious stuff and do convey messages to the society and the world around that human beings should not be treated according to religion and topographic orientation. Daring attempt by Sharukh Khan and Karan Johar for trying out something different this time than their usual projects.

Rev Linse cannot pronounce words like ‘Irinjalakkuda’ or ‘Annamanada’ properly. But that doesn’ t stop him from speaking animatedly about his life mission - to serve the poor, the sick, the physically and mentally challenged and the homeless in India.

It was a chance meeting with a priest from Kerala in 1972, who told him about the scenario in India, that made Monsignor Rev Rolfe Linse, a native of Duisburg, Germany, chart the entire course of his life. 38 years and 24 visits to India later, Rev Linse has been responsible for funding 52 charity institutions spread over 10 states in India, among which are vocational training institutes, schools, orphanages and medical clinics.

The All Saints Centre, Pullur, Pratheeksha Bhavan, Irinjalakkuda and Asha Bhavan, Annamanada, are some of them. And where does he find the enormous amount of funds needed for maintaining these institutions? He generated 70 percent of it by himself, incredible as it seems, by selling spices, tea etc from India in the open air markets in Germany.

His work has inspired a group of students to take up the cause and help him, but even when there is none, Rev Linse can be found pressing passersby to buy something, say his coworkers, even in cold winter days. At times he collects waste paper, used books and other materials to sell or conducts charitable walks. The funds collected thus have crossed a whopping 15 crore in Indian rupees so far.

But what makes him so passionate, to the point of being obsessed, about the cause? “Because I’ve experienced hunger first-hand,” he says, showing white marks on his feet, remnants of past malnutrition. Rev Linse had to flee from home with his mother and brother during the II World War when Germany came under the attack of Britain. They had nothing with them but the clothes on their back and had to spend 11 years in misery. Both he and his brother later entered the Ministry and before long, Rev Linse started charity work.

A feature of Rev Linse’s work is that his focus is always on making the poor and the deprived self-sufficient, whatever their disability.

The children at the homes funded by him are trained to be tailors, blacksmiths, welders etc.

Rev Linse is now 76 years old and retired but has no plans of retiring from his work. “Given a choice, I would like to settle in India, I have nobody in this world but my brother. But here they don’t need my hands, they need only my finances.” But the poverty levels in India are so huge and despite the staggering number of people he has rehabilitated, isn’t it all just a drop in the ocean? “When you are in a desert, even a little greenery is welcome.

Dubai Cares Water Bucket Walk Event - Friday, 20th November 2009

Dear Supporter,

November 20, 2009 marks the 20th anniversary of the United Nations’ Universal Children’s Day. On this important global occasion, Dubai Cares invites you to participate in the Water Bucket Walk, a symbolic walk-a-thon in support of children who do not have access to clean drinking water in schools around the world. Most of us are not aware that children in developing countries walk, on average, more than 6 km every day to collect water that is likely to make them sick, thus preventing them from attending school.

The Water Bucket Walk will give the UAE community the opportunity to experience a fraction of the difficulties children in developing countries face on a daily basis, by walking 3 km carrying a bucket much like a child in a rural community would do. Each participant’s entry fee of AED 30 will provide one child with clean drinking water for one year!

Here are the details:

When: Friday November 20th, 2009

Time: Pre-registration: 08:00 A.M. – 09:00 A.M.

Walk-a-thon: 09:00 A.M.

Where: Registration will take place in Jumeirah Beach Park and the walk-a-thon will commence on Jumeirah Beach Road.

Entrance Fee: AED 30/ per person

The AED 30 fee is equal to the amount it would take to sponsor one child’s access to clean drinking water for one year. As such, every person participating in the Water Bucket Walk will be representing one child’s access to clean drinking water for one year!

Please note that every participant will receive a Dubai Cares t-shirt and bucket.

Children under the age of 5 will be exempt from any fees.

Oct 21: National Institute of Rural Development (NIRD) under the Ministry of Rural Development, Government of India, located at Rajendra Nagar, Hyderabad-500030, has invited applications for admission to the fully residential Post-Graduate Diploma in Rural Development Management (PGDRDM) for 2010-11. The programme of one year duration extends from August 2010 to July 2011.

KOCHI: In an effort to promote free and open source software among students, a new initiative called Swathanthra Software Koottayma (SSK) has been formed at Vocational Higher Secondary School, Irumpanam, near here.

The SSK is a free software user group for students, and is the first of its kind in the State.

The first meeting of SSK was convened at the school. A number of teachers, students, free software activists and members of the Indian Libre Users Group (ILUG), Kochi chapter, attended the meeting.

The vision of SSK is to create a free thinking group which incorporates the core values of free software and use it through gaining knowledge, sharing and collaborating. There will be discussions on curriculum, syllabus and technology.

The activities of SSK include organising discussions on free software technologies, screening of movies, collaborative studies, presentations and workshops by the free software community group, bringing out free software-based newsletters and generating free software-based concepts for simple applications for the school and society.

There were discussions on the history of GNU project, GNU/Linux operating system and introduction to software licenses during the introductory session. The session on Malayalam computing dealt with the history of Malayalam computing, Swathanthra Malayalam computing project, introduction to applications like English-Malayalam dictionary and making a poster using GNU Image Manipulation Programme (GIMP).

Sameer Mohammed Thahir and Venkat of ILUG Kochi, Sanal Kumar and Thomas Yoyaku, teachers at VHSS Irumpanam, and Rimal, Geegu and Abhinav Thomas, students of the school, spoke at the meeting.

New Delhi, July 11: Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), The Advanced Center for Informatics and Innovative Learning (ACIIL) and IBM India today signed an MoU at Bangalore that they claimed would reinvent IT education in the country.

The collaboration, co-operation and joint working of IBM, with IGNOU, will what they say bridge the gap that existed till now on education, skills and national development, a varsity statement said.

As part of the MoU, IGNOU and IBM India would partner to skill students on the IT standards in the emerging verticals like healthcare, financial services and retail that have a significant growth potential, in addition to the skills demand of Open Source software and Open Standards, with live projects.

The three programs that will be offered in the first phase under this MoU would include -- a Certificate in Open Source Software, diploma in Open Source Software and Industry Vertical Domain Open Standards and Advanced Diploma in Industry Vertical Domain Open Standards (Healthcare/ Retail/ Insurance).

The Innovation Centre for Open Standards (iCos), an online platform, will be the underlying framework for the engagement between IBM and IGNOU for the execution of the courses. The IBM iCos platform links students' project based learning with IT industry and mentors.

NEW DELHI: In a unique initiative to promote advanced research and encourage higher education, the Delhi government will set up a Knowledge City in

the national capital, providing best possible infrastructure to institutions offering job-oriented courses.

The Knowledge City, to be set up on public-private partnership (PPP) basis, would offer modern infrastructure and services to self-financed institutions that offer professional courses, officials said.

They said the government has decided to develop the city to overcome the constraint of land availability by the self-financed institutions.

"The Knowledge City would offer best infrastructure and services to a number of self-financed institutions so that growth of these institutions is not affected by constraints of land availability," the Action Plan of the Delhi Government for implementation of the National Knowledge Commission (NKC) recommendations said.

The decision to establish the Knowledge City was taken as per the recommendations of NKC which was set up by prime minister Manmohan Singh in 2005 to prepare a roadmap for transforming India into a knowledge society, officials said.

The project has been already cleared by the Planning Commission and land earmarked, they added.

Drive without insurance? Then you'd better stay out of Ohio, where the state is considering a program that uses red-light cameras and insurance company databases to check passing traffic for uninsured motorists. The system would use license plate numbers to verify driver insurance. According to the Columbus Dispatch, officials in Chicago, who are considering the same system, from InsureNet of Novi, Michigan, think that such a program could generate $200 million in additional revenue for the Windy City.

When the system identifies an uninsured motorist, the driver would be sent a letter instructing him to take care of the problem. If he doesn't, a fine will soon follow. In Ohio, that fine is $125 for a first offense, $300 for a second and $550 for a third.

The system is already being provided to law enforcement, free of charge, so even those uninsured drivers who managed to dodge the cameras can be busted if they catch the attention of a local gendarme. The system can also provide them lien reports in real time.

I'm all for requiring drivers to carry insurance, but I'm not pleased by the prospect of insurance company databases being opened for InsureNet's searches. I can see how this would be a good deal for the insurance companies, because it will drive business their way. For the general public, however, this feels like another step toward a Big Brother future.

DUBAI — The Indian Minister of State for External Affairs, Dr Shashi Tharoor, has said the new government in New Delhi would take adequate measures to rehabilitate Indians returning home from the Gulf and other foreign countries due to the impact of the global financial downturn.

During his first visit to the UAE as a minister, Tharoor, who assumed office last month, also assured that the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government was taking measures to penalise illegal recruiting agencies that dupe workers by making false promises.

Tharoor, who had earlier made various suggestions to the government for providing financial assistance for the rehabilitation of Gulf returnees, said the Central Government would extend all support to the non-resident Indians (NRIs) returning after losing jobs due to recession, though it had not announced any special welfare package to rehabilitate them.

“The government is cautious…both about losing their valuable contribution (from abroad) and the potential problems they face. India won’t lose interest in them and the government will not be indifferent to them,” Tharoor told reporters at a press meet organised by the Indian Consulate in Dubai on Tuesday evening.

He was in Dubai for a stopover during his trip to Yemen for attending an international conference organised by the Indian Ocean Rim Association Countries. Answering questions about the actions being taken against unscrupulous recruitment agencies, he said the Indian government was taking various steps, including amendments to the Immigration Act to ensure stringent punishment for illegal agents.

“The government cannot solve every problem... but we are trying to crack down on this...We are extremely concerned that innocent working men and women are being duped by unscrupulous agents.” Though it had been difficult for the government to tackle the unregulated agents functioning outside the regulatory network of authorities, Tharoor said, both the countries — Indian and the UAE — have had constructive dialogues to solve many issues related to labourers. Consul-General of India Venu Rajamony said the government had already started cancelling the registration of agents found guilty and some had been prosecuted in criminal cases.

He said the Indian government had also launched a media campaign in different languages to make the public aware of such agents.

CHENNAI: In a move aimed at promoting research, the government has decided to create a dedicated unitary technical university comprising the four
premier colleges of Anna University (Chennai) and thus insulate their faculty from administrative chores relating to the running of other affiliated institutions. The technical university, which will begin functioning from this academic year, will consist of Guindy College of Engineering, Madras Institute of Technology, A C College of Technology, and School of Architecture and Planning.

Higher education minister K Ponmudy told the state assembly on Wednesday that 136 engineering colleges were affiliated to Anna University (Chennai), and hence the faculty was spending most of its time in managing affiliated colleges. Since professors were entrusted with duties of admission, conduct of examinations and inspection of infrastructure in affiliated colleges, they had little time to spend on research, he noted. Experts in technical education had recommended the creation of a unitary university to offer world-class master's programmes and research facilities. The government would float the new university this year itself, Ponmudy said.

The move, in a way, reverses the government's own decision some years back. Anna University had functioned as a premier unitary technical university till 2001 when the AIADMK government brought all engineering colleges under its purview in an effort to streamline and manage engineering education in the state.

When contacted, Anna University (Chennai) vice-chancellor P Mannar Jawahar said the creation of a unitary university would fuel high quality research. "The university's constituent colleges have highly qualified faculty with rich experience in research work, industrial consultancy and collaboration with funding agencies. We have research facilities, including sophisticated equipment which can be put to optimum use now. The faculty can focus full time on research, postgraduate technical education and industrial collaboration," he told The Times of India.

In the current academic year, Ponmudy said, the government would create more than 1,000 posts of lecturers in arts and science colleges and get them filled; in the process, guest lecturers teaching self-financing courses, which were later changed to general courses, would be phased out. The Teachers Recruitment Board would soon release the list of 1,195 lecturers, who were recruited recently. In government engineering colleges, 100 teaching posts would be filled.

Most students pursuing engineering courses in government colleges come from poor backgrounds and need accommodation to pursue their education. Because of this, Ponmudy said, the government was also planning to build new hostels or expand facilities in existing ones. New polytechnics would be opened in Theni, Madurai, Perambalur, Tiruvannamalai, Dharmapuri, Villupuram and Thiruvarur at a cost of Rs 12.3 crore each. The proposal had been forwarded to the Centre, and admissions would begin from the next academic year, he said.

Members of the royal family of the United Arab Emirates and UAE-based non-resident Indian Kannadiga B R Shetty have evinced interest to invest in Karnataka, chief minister B S Yeddyurappa said in Bangalore on Tuesday.

They have expressed a desire to invest in the areas of hotel, housing complexes, development of infrastructure facilities, energy, supply of drinking water in cities, urban development and waste management, among others, he said.

Addressing a meeting of the Karnataka NRI Forum, Yeddyurappa, however, did not talk about the extent of the proposed investment they were planning.

He said an NRI, in collaboration with Canadian firm CSQR Inc, had come forward to set up an Advanced Technology and Management Institute in Karnataka.
The chief minister said a data base of 701 NRI-Kannadigas had so far been created.

He said there was a need for active cooperation by the forum for government's aim of attracting investment of Rs300,000 crore after the proposed Global Investors' Meet.
"There is an intention to host 'Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas' in Bangalore. It's the responsibility of this forum to make it possible", the chief minister said.

BANGALORE: ‘Knowledge City’ holds a tremendous allure to prospective investors in Karnataka, given its hi-tech image. Though ambitious proposals bit
the dust a couple of years ago, a group of NRIs led by US-based Dr Girish has coming forward to set up a Knowledge City at an investment of nearly Rs 10,000 crore in Bangalore.

Chief minister B S Yeddyurappa during a meeting of the NRI committee, which he heads, expressed interest in the venture. It is likely that the government might underwrite the project to the tune of 20% of the cost. The proposed Knowledge City will consist of a hospital, education institutions, university and other facilities.

Besides, General Electric, the $200-billion American MNC, may enter into an agreement with the state government in health, energy, renewable energy and bio-mass. The company already has a considerable presence in the city with its medical systems business as well as its global research centre here. GE will invest in energy sector, renewable energy and impart knowledge in enhancing power production.

“A large amount of power is wasted during transmission. GE has expertise in reducing transmission losses. To have a first-hand insight into the functioning of the company, Yeddyurappa has agreed to visit GE’s facilities here,’’ Ganesh Karnik, vice-chairman of the NRI Cell, told reporters here on Tuesday. In addition, CSQR, a Canadian company has also shown interest in setting up a technology and management institute.

Spelling out the objectives of the cell, Karnik said the cell has created a database of 700 NRIs having roots in Karnataka, with many of them coming forward to invest in knowledge and technology-based units here. “This cell acts as a facilitator for the investors. As a part of our efforts, the CM has directed all departments to appoint a nodal officer for speeding up investments. Let investors come to us; we will do the leg work,’’ Karnik said.

Suresh Srinivasaiah of S J Experts, based in New Jersey, will set up a large solar energy unit here. The government has nominated three coordinators to seek investment — industrialist BR Shetty for the Gulf, Neeraj Patil for the UK and other European countries, and Mahesh Nagarajaiah for the US.

The department said in a press release that it planned to roll out new parking policies, which would include metered parking in the city centre.

It warned there would be “rigorous enforcement” of its new rules, although it did not go into detail about when or where meters would be switched on, or when drivers would start being charged and fined.

Both private and public parking spaces will be more tightly regulated, with the aim of encouraging drivers to stay for only a short time in busy city centre parking spots.

The first solar-powered meters were installed on Hamdan Street nearly three years ago, but they have lain unused until recently.

Last month, DoT staff began testing the devices, inserting coins and swiping credit cards.

Drivers will be able to pay for parking by text message, with a credit card or by pre-paid smart card, although the cost has not been disclosed.

The British company NCP Services, now called NSL Services Group, was hired last year to set up and manage the parking programme for the city centre and part of Airport Road.

Paid parking will be introduced in 10 stages over two-and-a-half years, with a total of 2,500 meters to be switched on.

The first year will see the recruitment and training of enforcement officers, the issuing of residents’ permits and a media campaign.

A transition period, during which offenders will be warned but not fined, is expected, but beyond this, repeat offenders risk having their vehicles clamped, towed away or impounded.

A contact centre and parking shop where drivers can buy permits and pay fines is to be opened.

Paid parking will eventually apply from the Corniche to Hazza bin Zayed Street between Khaleej al Arabi Road and the road that runs in front of Abu Dhabi Mall, as well as the strip from Hazza bin Zayed to Al Saada Street between Al Karamah Street and Fourth Street.

Mr Najeeb al Zarooni, the DoT’s parking director, said the system should not be seen as “a silver bullet” that would immediately solve the capital’s parking headaches, which partly stem from a growing number of vehicles registered.

“But we believe that positive impacts of the programme will begin to be felt by both drivers and residents before the year end,” he added.

Longer term, the DoT said yesterday it was looking for city centre sites for public car parks, either above or below ground. Temporary car parks may be erected initially.

ABU DHABI // More pedestrian bridges could be added to roads both within and outside city limits to reduce the growing number of people who are struck by vehicles.

At the launch of a three-month campaign to tackle jaywalking yesterday, Col Hamad al Shamsi, director of the police’s traffic and patrols department, said the department was looking at adding pedestrian bridges in more areas, including Mussafah and Shahama.

The colonel said the bridges were expected to be built in the coming years, although he could not give an exact date. The department has also asked the municipality to place barriers on pavements where pedestrians tend to jaywalk.

The number of pedestrians hit by vehicles in Abu Dhabi grew to 663 last year, up from 583 in 2007.

Yesterday the traffic department revealed it had issued Dh802,000 (US$218,000) worth of tickets since the start of this year, with 4,010 jaywalkers fined Dh200 each. Last year the fine for jaywalking was increased from Dh50.

Col al Shamsi said the department’s studies covered areas that lacked pedestrian crossings and were considered hot spots for accidents involving pedestrians.

Meanwhile, traffic police are focusing on educating the public on the rules for crossing roads and the dangers of jaywalking by increasing campaigns to fine jaywalkers. Patrols will be carried out by both traffic control police officers and undercover traffic officers.

“We have to consider the culture and background of pedestrians and make sure we get our message across,” said Col al Shamsi. “After last year’s campaign the number of accidents involving pedestrians dropped rapidly.”

He said pedestrians involved in accidents who were found to be jaywalking were liable to be fined.

Lt Col Ahmad al Shehhi, director of capital traffic police, said patrols would focus on hot spots including Mussafah, Shahama, Al Dhafra Road, the Corniche and Al Salam Street. “It is not possible to have a policeman on every road in every corner, so we assess which areas are the most dangerous.”

In the coming three months more police patrols will be dedicated to catching jaywalkers.

“We asked the municipality to place barriers on the pavements, especially in front of shops and public parks, to prevent people from crossing in areas where they are not supposed to,” said Col al Shamsi.

Brochures outlining the rules in Arabic and English are to be handed to pedestrians and motorists. One reminds pedestrians to look for the nearest subway or bridge before crossing the road, and to wait for the green pedestrian light before crossing at traffic lights.

Another brochure explains to motorists that white stripes across the road are pedestrian crossings and that priority should be given to pedestrians to allow them to cross.

The fine for not giving priority to pedestrians to cross is Dh500 and six black points.

In an expanding publishing industry, book editors with an eye for detail are in great demand.

Does reading books for a living seem like a dream job? Then book editing may be the perfect profession for you. Book editors do primarily what their job title suggests, which is editing books. However, being an editor also involves many other activities.

According to Sandhya Rao, Chief Editor of publishing house Tulika, a typical day in the life of an editor would involve such tasks as “looking at manuscripts, working with production, interacting with authors and illustrators, and in the case of books in different languages, interacting with translators.”

Book editing has many subfields and specialisations, ranging from mystery novels to biographies. This is why Rakesh Khanna, co-founder of Blaft Publications, feels that it is wise to “obtain two skills.” As an example, he cited an editor of biology textbooks, who “should be really strong in English as well as biology.”

Also, while editors at small and independent publishing houses generally edit manuscripts as well as interact with authors, editors at multinational publishing houses usually focus on one of the two tasks. Copy editors correct grammatical and spelling errors, whilst ensuring that the book is cohesive and factually accurate. Acquisitions editors are responsible for obtaining manuscripts, selecting those which show promise and communicating with the author.

The Indian book publishing industry is flourishing, and was worth Rs. 8,000 crore in 2006. Since then it has been growing rapidly. Ms. Rao of Tulika believes that there are several reasons for this. “The industry is expanding because the market has grown,” she says, adding that “so many foreign players are coming into India because India is a huge potential market, due to the large English-speaking population.” In fact, India is the third largest producer of books in English, after the United States and Britain. However, as Ms. Rao points out, the best-selling books in India are probably textbooks; with the number of school-going children increasing every year, the demand for these books should not diminish in the near future.

Qualifications

The qualifications required to become an editor are not set in stone. Manjula Ramesh, Head of Production at Emerald Publishers, says that a degree in any field is sufficient, as long as you have “a very good knowledge and a good flow in English.” The same applies if you are interested in editing books in other languages. This was reiterated by Mr. Khanna of Blaft Publications, who says that “whatever language you are editing, it should be the language you’ve grown up with and the language you read a lot.” Mrs. Rao of Tulika believes that while it is better to have a “postgraduate degree in a language,” it is not an absolute necessity.

Being a book editor calls for certain practical skills and abilities. According to Mr. Khanna, the job requires an aptitude for “paying attention to various small details.” A talent for negotiating with other people, such as authors, is also beneficial. Mrs. Ramesh of Emerald Publishers adds that an editor should “be creative, should have the patience to peruse the book once or twice or even more and should have high concentration,” but above all else, they should have a passion for books.

You can prepare to enter the industry by reading books in every possible genre, editing a school or college magazine and working part-time as a freelance editor while still in college. Gaining experience is invaluable to a budding editor. Publishing houses generally provide a pleasant environment to work in. Alternatively, if you prefer working from home, freelance editing might be a good option. Ultimately, a book editor enjoys reading, is proficient in English or other languages and actively tries to discover new writing talent. If you thrive in the world of words, there’s a great career waiting for you!

Gangtok, June 15: Students from a government secondary school in remote Yuksom, West Sikkim have written 5-page letter to the Indian cricket team captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni highlighting the effects of his brand endorsement on the fragile ecology of the Himalayan State.

To supplement their arguments for corporate responsibility towards environment, the students have gifted a discarded wrapper of ‘Lays’, a potato chips.

With the volume of such garbage increasing along with the increase in tourist footfalls in the area,the students decided to pay it back to the celebrity who endorses them.

Hence the letter to Dhoni and the attached wrapper as a sample on how the tentacles of plastic in guise of chip packets have reached the relative virgin high altitude areas of West Sikkim.

The students admit in their letter that this is not the best of gifts but expressed hope the gesture communicates the urgency of the matter to the cricket star.

Since the concerned students do not have the mailing address of Mahi, they have marked their letter to him and addressed it to a ‘reputed, eco friendly electronic media’ with copies marked to local newspapers of Sikkim.

They want their words and concerns to reach Mahi while adding the ‘stunt’ is neither to defame the Team India captain or the company manufacturing the product.

The students have even invited MSD to visit Yuksam and a get a guided tour of biodiversity hotspot from where the message has reached him.

CHENNAI: The SRM University (deemed) near Chennai will introduce undergraduate courses in nano technology, infrastructural engineering, nuclear
engineering, architectural engineering and fashion technology this academic year.

Its chancellor T R Pachamuthu announced this while distributing admission letters to students on Friday last. According to a press release, the university has enhanced its cumulative scholarship for meritorious students from Rs 6.5 crore last year to Rs 9 crore now.

"Under the Founder's Scholarship, 20 toppers of the SRM Engineering Entrance Examination would be granted free admission into the B.Tech course of their choice. Besides, another Rs 2 crore would be offered as scholarship in addition to a stipend of Rs 1,000 per month," the press release said.

Pachamuthu offered free education to all the 32 district toppers in Tamil Nadu and a 50% waiver in tuition fees for 200 students who had scored an aggregate of 90% or above in their CBSE Plus Two examination and 95% and above in the State Board higher secondary examinations.

"Apart from this 77 seats would be allotted under the sports quota which also comes under the Founder's Scholarship programme. Of the 77 seats, 25 would be for B.Tech, 22 for MBA and the balance for other fields like science and humanities," the release added.

Those who have passed Higher Secondary (10+2)/equivalent examination with five subjects including Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English and obtained 50% marks in aggregate (45% marks for the SC/ST) are eligible to apply. Applicant should attain 17 years of age by 31st December, 2009. Blind (including colour blind), deaf, and/or dumb candidates are not eligible to apply for the course.

There are 60 seats of which 14 seats are reserved for nominees, one each from Jammu and Kashmir, Manipur, Meghalaya, , Nagaland, Sikkim, Andaman and Nicobar Island, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Daman and Diu, Lakshadweep and Puducherry and 2 each from Mizoram and Tripura. Those possessing MBBS Degree from any recognized institution are eligible to apply. The upper age limit is 45 years for in-service candidates and 35 years for others as on August 1, 2009, which can be relaxed up to a maximum of 5 years in exceptional cases by the Admission Officer if he/she is satisfied with the merit of the case.

The intake will be limited to a maximum of 15 seats. Of these, two seats are earmarked for World Health Organization sponsored fellows. For the remaining 13 seats, admission will be done on the basis of an entrance test. These 13 seats will be distributed in the ratio of 60% for In-Service Candidates (working in Health Institutions / Organizations in Central / State Government or Public Sector and having five years experience, of which at least three years should be in Public Health activities) and 40% for direct candidates. In-service candidates shall, at the time of application or counseling for admission, furnish a letter from their employer that, if they are admitted, they would be relieved for two years for undertaking the course on a full-time basis at NICD.

Reservation will be as per Government/University norms with 27% for OBC; 15% for SC; 7.5% for ST; 5% for Defence category and 3% for Physically Handicapped Candidates. One supernumerary seat is earmarked for Kashmiri migrants for which the admission will be based on the Entrance Test.

Chennai, June 13 : The Madras High Court directed closure of off-campus centres and study centres run by the Institute of Chartered Financial Analysts of India (ICFAI) Society in Tamil Nadu. Disposing off a batch of petitions, a division bench, comprising Justices S J Mukhopadhaya and V Dhanapalan, said: "we have no hesitation to hold that ICFAI Society and ICFAI University have no legal right to run institutions of this kind in the state of Tamil Nadu and they are hereby restrained from running such instutitions".

Noting that as per regulations, no off-campus centres or study centres could be opened without prior approval of UGC and state governments, the bench said in the case on hand,
such centres had been set up with prior approval of UGC and Tamil Nadu government.

"They cannot be allowed to run any longer. If such centres are allowed to continue, the future of gullible students will be jeopardised by way of money and time," the court observed.

It felt that irregularities and improprieties in using the educational system to the advantage of certain private institutions would give a wrong signal and put the common man in peril if such kind of mushrooming of private institutions, without recognition, affiliation and proper grant of permission was allowed.

"Therefore we hope that statutory bodies such as the All India Council for Technical Education, UGC or another equivalent bodies will take constructive steps to bring in appropriate rules and regulations with stringent penal provisions to scotch all irregular and illegal institutions," they said.

BAHRAIN resident Sihas Babu is hoping to rewrite Indian law by winning the right for millions of people to vote.

The 35-year-old has already filed a landmark case in India against an act in the Indian Constitution, which does not allow Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) to take part in national or state elections.

Although he is effectively waging a one-man campaign, any victory would be celebrated by Indian expatriates around the globe.

He filed a case in the Kerala High Court against India's Election Comm-ission, the Kerala State Government and Indian Central Government last Monday.

The Indian public can only vote in an election if they live in a constituency in India, while government employees posted abroad are the only expats who can vote.

Mr Babu, a manager at a building materials company, told the GDN he decided to file the case after flying home to vote in recent parliamentary elections, only to find his name had been taken off the electoral roll.

"The clauses in Section 19 and 20 of the Indian Constitution's R P (Representation of the People) Act, 1950, does not allow us NRIs any voting rights if we have been away from India for more than six months," he said.

"I went to Kerala on April 9 to take part in the parliamentary elections but was told that my name had been removed from the list of voters.

"The Election Commission's presiding officer will check with all constituencies if the person is a resident of that particular constituency - this is how my name was removed.

"However, I know of many NRIs whose names are still on the list just because they have the influence with different political parties.

"NRIs play such an important role in developing India and there is so much money coming into the country from Indians working abroad.

"But when it comes to choosing leaders and a government who will be responsible for making decisions affecting NRIs as well, we are nowhere in the picture.

"This is not at all acceptable and it's about time things changed.

"We should also have the right to choose our leaders.

"The government may argue that NRIs are not being allowed to vote to avoid malpractices of voting with a fake identity and double voting.

"But technology is so advanced these days that such practices can be caught or avoided."

Mr Babu claims to be the first person to file a case against the Indian government with a view to overhauling its domestic law.

The court has now given the state and central governments, as well as the Election Commission, a month to respond to the case.

"This law was drafted in 1950 and with changing times, necessary amendments should be made," said Mr Babu.

"I contacted leading Kerala High Court lawyer Kaleeswaran Raj and filed a case on May 25.

"If the concerned parties reject the petition, it is up to the court to pass the verdict of whether to change the clause or not.

"However, if the court rules against me, I will take the case to the Supreme Court of India."

Mr Babu has lived in Bahrain for around 15 years and is now hoping to drum up support for his case among Indian associations and clubs here.

Abu Dhabi successfully hosts DTAC 2009

Abu Dhabi, May 24, 2009: Abu Dhabi, the land of sunshine hosted a mega event; DTAC 2009 with the theme "Journey Towards Excellence" under the patronage of H.E. Sheikh. Nayhan Bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, for 3 days from 21st - 24th May 2009. The Toastmasters from GCC countries and Jordan (more than 700 delegates) participated in this event. The Toastmasters, is the forum that enhances communication and leadership skills. The strong arm of Toastmasters - Division H, Abu Dhabi an active member of NMC Community chapter, TM Praveen Rao, was the Chief-Sergeant of arms for all the three days carrying his slogan "JAI HO" (derived from Indian Movie Slumdog Millionaire). This MEGA annual event of Toastmasters was held in Abu Dhabi, hosted by Division H of Abu Dhabi with DR. Nasef Dhafari as the DTAC 2009 Chairman. The Qualifier Round Inauguration was held on 21st May at the Grand Hall of India Social and Cultural Centre, Abu Dhabi (ISC).

The qualifier round Inaugural Keynote Speech "Performance under pressure" was delivered by International speaker: Darren LaCroix. This was followed by Qualifier Rounds - Humorous Speech Contests, Table Topics Contests and International Speech Contests which were held at the ISC Mini Auditorium . Awards Ceremony was held in the evening for those who qualified for the final round.

Final session was held on 22nd May, at the Intercontinental Abu Dhabi. H.E. Sheikh Nayhan Bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, UAE Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research was the chief guest. His Excellency in his address to the DTAC 2009 audience disagreed that the communication and leadership skills are inherited. His Excellency said, that these could be built, developed or cultivated. DUBAI — Girls have once again outshone boys in the India’s Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) Grade 12 examinations, bagging top positions in all three streams of Science, Humanities and Commerce.

The CBSE results for the Gulf region were announced on Friday.

According to the lists of their toppers received from 29 schools by Khaleej Times on Friday, Savithri Anju of St Joseph’s School, Abu Dhabi has emerged the topper in the Science stream with 96 per cent marks, Cutee Bhalla of Our Own English High School (OOEHS), Sharjah in the Commerce stream with 95.8 per cent and Rabiya Fahma of OOEHS, Dubai in Humanities with 91.4 per cent.

The region has also recorded an increase of the overall pass percentage of 0.63 over last year.

“I was expecting 90 per cent but this has truly been a pleasant surprise. My grades will help secure me a place at Warwick University in London for a course in management,” said Cutee Bhalla, Commerce topper.

Science topper Savithri Anju said good results are all about being prepared and not last-minute cramming. “These are hard-earned results. I studied regularly for this. Now I am preparing for an engineering entrance (exam),” she said in a telephonic conversation from India.

Principal of OOEHS, Sharjah, Dr Farooq Wasil said his student has always been an all rounder. “Cutee has not only been a bookworm but has also been exceptionally bright and a student leader. All this also boils down to good parenting,” he said.

This year, most of the top positions in the schools have been secured by  girls. While the pass percentage of girls was 96.30, that of boys was 89.86 in the region.

DUBAI — Students in the Gulf have outperformed their Indian counterparts with a record of 93.23 pass percentage in the Grade XII examinations of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). The CBSE announced the results for the Gulf region on Friday.

According to Indian media reports, the overall pass percentage in the region recorded a marginal increase of 0.63 per cent from last year. The overall pass percentage in India stands at 81 per cent with an increase of 0.09 per cent from last year.

Around 3,480 students from 40 schools appeared for their Grade XII examinations that commenced on March 2 from the UAE. Toppers in the country have recorded 96 per cent marks in Science, 95.6 per cent in Commerce and 91.4 per cent in Humanities.

“Students in the Gulf are getting much better. Schools here set high standards and benchmarks for students to achieve. There is always a conscious responsibility to drive performance with our teachers committing themselves to student enrichment,” said Dr Farooq Wasil, principal of Our Own English High School, Sharjah whose Cutee Bhalla became UAE topper in the Commerce stream.

Education officials announced an online questionnaire yesterday allowing parents to comment on their children’s schools.

“This is the first step towards the instillation of the culture of transparency between the school, the home and Abu Dhabi Education Council,” said Mughair Khamees al Khabeeli, the general director of Adec, which is conducting the survey.

“The questionnaire covers all the aspects of the education paradigm in Abu Dhabi schools.”

The site asks parents whether the questionnaire should be offered permanently and what makes them satisfied with their school’s performance.

“Based on optional answers, the questionnaire covers such aspects as the school environment, curricula, administrative and teaching staff performance, communication between parents and schools, equipment and amenities,” Mr al Khabeeli said. The results of a similar survey were released this month.

Adec said 70 per cent of parents were satisfied with the schools. That survey queried almost 5,000 parents, who were asked to grade a variety of factors.

The results of a similar survey of Dubai parents were recently released by the Knowledge and Human Development Authority.

DUBAI — The Ministry of Culture, Youth and Community Development on Wednesday announced the launch of the fourth session of the UAE Appreciation Award for Science, Arts and Literature.

Bilal Al Budur, Executive Director for Culture and the Arts at the ministry, said the award’s objective is to stimulate the intellectual, cultural and creative people in the UAE, to highlight and honour them and motivate the younger generations to improve knowledge of science.

In its fourth session, the award this year consists of five key areas: science (Electronic Engineering), literature (Al Faseeh poetry), field studies and research (Management Studies), field of plastic arts (Spatial Configuration), and field of performing arts (Directing). ABU DHABI — A comprehensive safety regime programme aimed at creating awareness and enhancing health and safety of workers who are exposed to high temperatures and humidity during the summer months was launched in Abu Dhabi on Wednesday.

The ‘Safety in the Heat’ programme, launched by the Heath Authority-Abu Dhabi (HAAD) in cooperation with the Ministry of Labour (MoL) for the first time in the UAE, targets those who work in the construction, transportation, agriculture, manufacturing and heavy industry sectors.

“HAAD and MoL are strongly supporting this programme and want to see this rollout and implemented to as many companies in Abu Dhabi as possible. Companies and organisations from other emirates and countries in the region are welcome to participate in the programme,” Dr Jens Thomsen, Section Head, Occupational and Environmental Health at HAAD, told company representatives at the launch.

The programme will support employers through offering a comprehensive package of educational and awareness materials in English, Arabic, Hindi, Urdu and Malayalam. It focuses on the prevention of heat-related illnesses such as rash, cramps, exhaustion and heat stroke caused by exposure to the hot environment.

The ‘Safety in the Heat’ recommendations are validated by HAAD and are applicable to workers in Abu Dhabi and the GCC region.

The programme has been developed following a two-year scientific research by the UAE University and Curtin University of Technology in Australia, sponsored by HAAD and participated by select companies in Abu Dhabi  and Dubai.

A few hundred workers were engaged in these studies which include monitoring the workers’ heart rate for three continuous days, measuring their hydration status, recording of workers’ core temperature throughout the work shift and documenting environmental conditions.

“We found that the hydration status of the workers when they come to work is generally poor, and they tend to stay that way during the day... there is a lack of general awareness among employers and workers on how to prevent heat illness,” said Dr Graham Bates, Medical Physiologist from Curtin University of Technology.

The heat management programme also introduces a new heat stress index called Thermal Work Limit (TWL), which was developed by Dr Bates. TWL monitors all environmental factors such as the dry bulb, radiant heat, wind speed and humidity to assess working conditions and determine the thermal risk to the employee.

In addition to the protection of workers, the programme is also aimed at improving productivity of companies and reduce the time loss due to injuries by workers, said Dr Bates.

ABU DHABI // Lifts will be installed on the footbridge in front of Abu Dhabi Mall, and the traffic signal removed, in an attempt to stop pedestrians making dangerous crossings at the spot, a city official said yesterday.

Khaled al Junaibi, project manager for the Salam Street underpass project, said the lifts had been ordered and should be installed by the end of the summer at the bridge on the street that runs in front of the mall.

Pedestrians going to or from the mall often walk and run across five lanes of one-way traffic at a signal crossing designated for “handicapped only” rather than use the footbridge just steps away. Many of them cross the street against the light during breaks in traffic rather than wait for a “walk” signal.

Mr al Junaibi said city planners did not want people to cross at street level in front of the mall.

“When they cross the road we are forced to give less time for the traffic. If we give less time for this traffic, it will be backed up.”

The one-way traffic has been divided by bollards, leaving three lanes for vehicles going towards Al Meena Road and the Corniche and two lanes for local traffic, going to sites such as the mall or the Beach Rotana hotel.

Traffic passing the mall is particularly heavy at present because lorries and cars have been diverted on to the road by construction on Salam Street.

Some pedestrians make it only as far as the bollards and then wait as vehicles drive by within touching distance on either side of the pedestrians.

“We know about this issue,” Mr al Junaibi said. “We have ordered some elevators, and by the end of the summer they are supposed to be fixed.”

The crossing and signal were meant to be used by the disabled and the elderly who could not use the bridge, Mr al Junaibi said.

At about 5pm on one recent weekday, large groups of pedestrians crossed at street level with just a few opting to climb the flights of stairs to the bridge.

The traffic showed red against traffic for about 50 seconds to allow pedestrians to cross. Some impatient people crossed illegally, and many were forced to run. Motorists could be seen slowing down. The driver of a silver taxi slammed on his brakes and screeched to a halt to avoid hitting a young boy.

Kailash Tiwari, a road safety specialist with 30 years of experience as a traffic engineer, said the municipality was right to encourage people to use the footbridges. But he said a pedestrian-controlled signal should be installed at the crossing to give priority to the disabled and elderly who need to use it.

Mr al Junaibi said planners try to have pedestrian crossings at street level where possible. “It’s an equation we have to manage between the traffic and the pedestrian. It is OK for them to cross at certain locations, but we don’t want them to affect the quality of the traffic.”

He said staff at the traffic centre at Abu Dhabi Municipality were able to monitor the timing of the signal and adjust it if necessary. He added that lifts might be installed at other temporary footbridges.

Last month Col Gaith al Zaabi, the director of the Ministry of Interior’s traffic department, called on municipalities to install lifts at footbridges. He also said municipalities should add control systems for pedestrians in front of crossings with traffic lights and do more to deter jaywalkers, such as ensuring broken construction barriers are fixed promptly.

Twenty-six people were killed crossing roads in Abu Dhabi in the first 71 days of this year.

With few mid-block crossings in the capital, pedestrians have a choice of walking sometimes a kilometre between traffic signals or dashing across the road during breaks in traffic. Motorists rarely slow down for them.

Several pedestrians yesterday said they chose to cross at street level near the mall because it was easier than climbing the footbridge.

Hamed Ali Ahmed, 22, who works at the mall, said he sometimes used the bridge, but that when he was in a hurry to get to work he would cross at street level.

Last Updated: May 15. 2009 2:56PM UAE / May 15. 2009 10:56AM GMT DUBAI // Taxis roaring along the city’s roads at high speeds may soon be a thing of the past as devices that prevent them from going faster than 100kph have been installed in 200 of the vehicles.

By the beginning of next month, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) will assess the results and consider placing the speed limiters in every taxi in Dubai.

The move follows a similar initiative in Abu Dhabi, where devices limit the capital’s silver taxis to 120kph.

“We need drivers to change their attitude to speed and reduce it,” said Ahmed Mohammed al Hammadi, director of resources and support at the RTA’s Dubai Taxi Corporation.

The initiative is expected to cut emissions and fuel consumption as well as speed.

“We need to save our environment and this machine can measure the carbon dioxide emissions output of the engine,” Mr al Hammadi said.

The Dubai Taxi Corporation has 3,500 cars in its fleet and if the trial goes well, they will all get the speed limiters.

Taxis belonging to other franchises will also be fitted with the new device, bringing the number of vehicles with it to more than 6,000.

Currently, there is a system that notifies head office if a driver is speeding and a penalty is automatically issued. But under the new system, they will be restricted to speeds below the national limit. Some parts of Dubai have speed limits of 120kph, but the engines will be fixed not to break the 100kph barrier, irrespective of the restrictions on the road.

“We have done the studies on where our fleet is going and at what time of the day, either at peak or off-peak times and found we don’t need to open the limit more than 100kph,” said Mr al Hammadi.

Only cars that leave the emirate regularly, for example airport taxis that travel to Al Ain or Abu Dhabi, will be permitted to go at a higher speed.

Taxi drivers backed the limiters yesterday. “It’s a good idea. There are no more worries for speed cameras if I am tempted to break the speed limit,” said Yaal Shah, from Pakistan.

“The only problem is when I drive a customer to Jebel Ali or the airport along Sheikh Zayed Road and they are late, they ask why I am only doing 100kph,” he added.

Mr Yaal said he had been given only two speeding fines in his 12 years as a taxi driver in Dubai.

“It’s not a problem in the city as you don’t go any faster than that, but when I’m out on Emirates Road, I can see it as a nuisance.” Govendam Sanana from India said he very rarely broke the limit so the new move did not affect him.

“When I am on my own in the car, it is OK to go a bit faster but if I have a family with children or even tourists, I do not want to frighten them,” he said. “There are enough crazy drivers on the road and I try to keep them calm when I drive by going at a safe speed. A normal speed is better for everybody’s health, but there are a lot of crazy drivers out there.”

Adil Sadak, from India, said the power of his car, a Toyota Camry 2L, was sometimes too tempting.

“I know when I am on my own on a big, open, empty road I would like to get to the other end of it quicker. We have a problem with speed cameras so if we do not know the road, we will not do it,” he said.

In Abu Dhabi, all seven firms operating the newer silver taxis have had to fit their cars with speed limiters that restrict cars from exceeding 120kph. Gold and white taxis, which are being slowly phased out, are exempt.

The limiter is a small device attached to the engine and controlled through a monitor inside the car. It works by limiting the flow of fuel to the engine when 116kph is reached, causing the car to level out at 120kph.

Drivers can override the system for 10 seconds by pressing a button near the car radio controls or on the gear shift, allowing them to accelerate when they need to.

Drivers could in theory hit the button continuously, but the companies can track the number of times it is pressed and could reprimand those who overuse it.

During this time of the year, parents and students often begin to discuss and or finalize the selection of higher education programs to prepare their children for eventual career paths.

My experience over that last five years is that often these decisions are made on the basis of status, family history (someone in the family is in the profession) or on a perception of constitutes a “hot” or trendy career field.

While making selections for professional endeavors and the educational programs that are pre-requisite in this manner is one way to plan for the future, it unfortunately overlooks two important variables. Does the individual have the traits and preferences that fit well with that profession and perhaps, more important in the long run, will they truly embrace that profession with not only their mind but their heart?

Global research and the experience of professional career coaches suggest an intense desire for a career makes all the difference.

I often ask both youth and older career changers the following question: What can you imagine yourself doing for work that would make you jump out of bed every morning with anticipation and joy? What do you enjoy so much that you would do it even if you were not paid for it?

While some think these questions are silly or idealistic, the truth is we do our best work when we can add passion and enthusiasm.

Last Updated: April 21. 2009 / A minister yesterday said that two types of common offences – traffic violations and antisocial behaviour – could soon be punishable by community service.

A draft law was recently approved by the Cabinet that would give courts the power to order people convicted of minor crimes to work in the community instead of serving jail time.

Speaking to members of the Federal National Council yesterday, Sheikh Saif bin Zayed, the Minister of Interior, for the first time specified the category of offences and types of community service that could be included.

It remained unclear, however, exactly what crimes would be covered.

Referring first to antisocial behaviour, he said community service could help address the fact that the federal Government had no plans to follow some emirates in introducing a code of conduct.

He was responding to a question by an FNC member from Abu Dhabi, Ahmad al Dhahiri, who complained about the lack of a federal code of behaviour.

Dubai, for instance, has introduced such a code. Among other things, it says that people can be warned or fined for public displays of affection.

In severe cases, they can face jail terms and deportation.

The emirate’s code also calls for people to respect the local culture and religion, and urges visitors to avoid wearing clothing that “exposes parts of the body”.

“The ministry has taken an important step which is the alternative penalty law that will be brought before your council ... soon,” Sheikh Saif said.

“Community service was suggested for simple crimes committed by individuals instead of sending them to prison.

“People who face penalties are members of the society, and sometimes prison doesn’t achieve the punishment that the Government is seeking, and therefore community service is suggested.”

Responding to a suggestion by Mr al Dhahir that the Interior Ministry distribute a booklet explaining to foreigners how they should behave in the UAE, Sheikh Saif said: “I can’t make people read the criminal law.”

Instead, he said, a new department at the ministry, expected to start operating in the second quarter, would be responsible for promoting respect for the law.

He suggested it would take some time to educate visitors: “We can’t educate people in one or two years.”

Turning to community service for traffic offences, Sheikh Saif said: “They would be sent to schools to talk to pupils about their mistakes or would be told to spend time in the emergency rooms at hospitals to see for themselves the danger of their actions.” In the US and the UK, among other countries, community service is imposed for a range of offences.

Service can involve working in teams with other offenders, tidying up scenic spots, removing graffiti or carrying out anti-crime measures, such as installing gates and security locks. Others could be ordered to work in charity shops, for instance.

Also during yesterday’s session, the Minister of Health, Humaid Mohammed Obaid al Qattami, promised that more jobs would be created in the coming year for doctors and nurses in hospitals and clinics across the country.

Mr al Qattami was answering a question by Salem al Naqbi, a member of the Federal National Council from Sharjah, who said that Emirati doctors were doing jobs that were below their qualifications. The member also said hospitals and clinics were understaffed.

The minister said measures were being taken to “improve the conditions” of ministry staff. He said the ministry had more 1,766 job openings in 2008, most of which have been already filled.

“Hopefully, in co-operation with the Ministry of Finance in the coming weeks the conditions of more than 700 employees will be improved,” Mr Qattami said.

The FNC members also passed a draft amendment of some articles of a 2006 law on the banning of production, storage and use of chemical weapons. It calls for the creation of a national committee to monitor and regulate the use of dangerous chemical substances and chemical weapons. The committee would be also responsible for enforcing the law.

No News 16th edition - Reflections of Warriors

Dear Friends,

Welcome to read the 16th issue of No News. In the olden days, it was a tradition for elders to sit with children and tell them stories. Mostly this happened in the evening and a group of 7 to 8 children gather around to listen a story, a short one with a moral ending. In those days, it was the natural formative way to groom the children to a responsible citizen. As we progressed and as the combined families shrunk to single family and single child, this tradition had a slow death. The busy schedule of both working parents and limited opportunities to interact with relatives and friends killed the age old tradition of story telling. Children, where do they go and what do they do to pick up precious pearls of wisdom?. TV cartoons or serials?. The importance of school libraries and regular reading lessons gets prominence at this stage. More libraries and reading opportunities should be made available for our children. A point to ponder.

It is not easy to preach and not at all easy to practise what we preach. I myself had a good experience two days ago. As a strong advocate and follower of traffic and safety rules, I try and make sure to follow the rules. They say, there is always a secret eye watching you and this happened after I parked my car in front of a road side villa. After finishing my work, I was taking my car and there comes a hand stopping me. A traffic warden walked from nowhere and handed over to me a parking violation ticket. He continued, Sir, you have parked in front of a no parking zone!. I looked around and could not locate any no-parking signs. Enquiring a little more about the locality I discovered that previous day, many drivers double parked in that area and created traffic obstructions for the residents and their complaints caused this decision of reinforcing an old no-parking situation in that area. I drove away accepting it as a good source of permanent reminder to stay away from future violations.

Participating recently in a photography competition by Malayala Manorama newspaper gave me an opportunity to experience the intensity associated with all those children taking part in various reality shows and events. Apart from having talent, they and their entire team should have the motivation to sustain their interest and efforts during the period they compete. To generate continuous interest amongst the audience is not an easy task. It is at this challenging time that innovative and inventive creative qualities within a person blossoms. This automatically becomes a grooming ground of future real time man management for the child. A look at the leading participants of any of the major competition will give you an idea about them and their academic skills and added value of extra-curricular talent.

Incidentally, this also brought in front of me another startling factor from a series of music reality shows concluded recently. As many as 5 children belonging to a small community – warrier’s - came to the finals of various regional singing reality shows. Arun Gopan, Mridula V R, Durga Warrier, Parvathy and Rashmi Vijayan. It is nice to see parents promoting children and their talent to blossom along with their academic progress. A new set of real life winners are being groomed and let out to the society to rule the future world of talent. How important is the role of parents here in the success achieved by each one of them? I really applaud them for supporting their children to come out and perform to their best.

On a similar platform, I look at the opportunities available to our children and those left un-explored by them. In our specific case, www.talentshare.blogspot.com initiative gives children the perfect platform to expand their non-performing talent. With a small effort of sending a creative work by email in jpg form, a child’s expressive thoughts gets into a history of his/her life. Imagine the feeling he/she gets after sending it across to his favourite uncle or grand parents across the world. Regular participation in it provides a self progress report for the growth of their creative career as they could analyse by themselves the creative efforts before, now and after. Please do not miss this opportunity to groom your child to participate in future at bigger venues whenever it is made available.

Higher education options for children are getting competitive than ever. The current economic scenario world-wide have reprioritised the demand in the field of education. Interests in arts, economics and language have gained back prominence. Specific job oriented courses have come up and even professional courses have direct admission facilities for students to join them straight from their high school. www.cbseplus.blogspot.com is dedicated to bring out the best support role for students. Several links with the objective of giving maximum guidance to children have been included in it. Parents, teachers and students are kindly requested to utilise this site to the maximum benefit they could reap from it. Nothing comes easy and free. Here, all the above are free for use. March 18 : National School of Drama, Bahawalpur House, Bhagwandas Road, New Delhi-1, an autonomous institution, under the Ministry of Culture, Government of India has invited applications for admission to the 3- Year Diploma Course (full-time residential) in Dramatic Arts, starting in July 2009.

The programme is aimed at training students to become professionals in the area of acting, design and other related disciplines of theatre. The medium of Instruction is Hindi/English.
Applicant should be a Graduate in any subject from a recognized University in India, should have participation in at least 6 productions, should have working knowledge of Hindi & English. Applicant should be at least 20 years of age and should not be over 30 years of age as on 1.7.2009. The upper age limit is relaxable by 5 years for SC/ST candidates.

Out of 23 seats, 3 seats are reserved for SC, 1 for ST, 3 for OBC except Creamy Layer as notified by Government) and Physically Disabled persons, as per Govt, of India rules.

March 21 : Karnataka Religious & Linguistic Minority Professional Colleges Association (KRLMPCA) has invited applications for the Under Graduate Common Entrance Test (UG-CET), 2009-10 (Medical/Dental/Engineering), for admission to the member institutes of the association.

Eligibility Criteria:

Medical/Dental: Applicant should have passed II PUC/10+2 or equivalent with Physics, Chemistry Biology and English with 50% marks in aggregate in PCB.

Engineering: Applicant should have passed II PUC/10+2 or equivalent with Physics, Mathematics as compulsory subjects along with Chemistry/Bio Technology/Computer Science/Biology/Electronics as optional subjects with English as one of the languages of study and obtained minimum aggregate of 45% in the optional subjects.

Applicants will be ranked based on the marks secured by them in UG-CET. Those securing less than 50% aggregate marks in the UG CET will not be eligible for admission and hence will not be included in Rank List.

The UG-CET will be held at Bangalore, Belgaum, Delhi, Gulbarga, Guwahati, Mangalore, and Raichur on 24th May, 2009 (Sunday), between 9 am and 3 pm, as per the following schedule.
Physics: 9.30 am to 10.30 am, Chemistry: 11 am to 12 pm, Biology: 12.30 pm to 1.30 pm and Mathematics: 2 pm to 3 pm.

Detailed address of the examination center would be made available on the admission tickets which could be downloaded by entering the name of applicant as user name and date of birth as password, from the Association’s website www.kmca.info. UG CET will carry maximum of 60 marks in each subject, with multiple choice questions, mostly based on I/II PUC syllabi prescribed by the Department of Pre-University Education, Karnataka State. Candidates have to mark the answers on the OMR Answer sheets using blue or black ball point pen only. There will be no negative marking for wrong answers. Candidates can take with them, the replica of the OMR Answer paper, after the examination.

Answer Keys will be uploaded on 25th May, 2009. Objections, if any, are to reach Chief Examiner latest by 5 pm on 28th May, 2009 along with all the supporting documents, only by Post. Engineering, Arts and Science Colleges, Govt. Aided Engineering, Arts & Science Colleges, and Govt. Quota seats in Self-financing Engineering, Arts & Science Colleges/standalone Institutions. NRI Admissions for B.Tech/B.Arch at NIT- C

April 10 : National Institute of Technology Calicut, NIT Campus PO, Kozhikode, Kerala- 673 601, has invited applications from Dependants of NRIs for admissions to B.Tech/B.Arch Programmes for the session 2009-10.

Admission is offered only to sons/daughters of NRIs. Applicant in this category should have passed the final examination of 10+2 (Class XII) or its equivalent qualifying examination, given in Annexure I of the Prospectus available at http://www.nitc.ac.in/ and should be eligible for Central Counselling of the Central Counselling Board as per the results of the All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE--2009).

For admission to B.Tech, applicant should have studied Physics & Mathematics (compulsory) with one among Chemistry / Biotechnology / Computer Science / Biology at the qualifying examination. For admission to B.Arch, applicant should have studied Mathematics as a subject at Plus Two and should have passed 10+2 level examination with 50% marks in aggregate.

Maximum age for admission is 25 years as on October 1, 2009. For applicants of SC/ST/PH categories, upper age limit is relaxable by 5 years. Maximum age for them will be 30 years as on October 1, 2009. There are 5 seats each in Civil Engineering, Computer Science & Engineering, Electrical & Electronics Engineering, Electronics & Communication Engineering and Mechanical Engineering, 2 in Chemical Engineering, 1 each in Production Engineering, Biotechnology and B.Arch, under NRI category.

Application has to be submitted online by clicking here . After submission of the details, a print out of the online application has to be taken. A passport size photograph taken not earlier than 3 months from the date of notification is to be affixed on the Application Form. The photo in the application should be self attested. (Eight more copies of the same photograph and one stamp size photograph should be produced at the time of Counselling/Admission).

The following documents should be enclosed with the print out of the online application form:

(i) Attested copy of proof of date of birth
(ii) Attested copy of the mark lists and pass certificate of the qualifying examination, if available
(iii) Course and Conduct certificate from the Head of the institution last attended
(iv) Attested copy of AIEEE-2009 Admit Card.
(v) Attested copy of NRI certificate, format of which is available in Appendix III of the Prospectus
(vi) Demand Draft for Rs.2000/- drawn in favour of ‘Director, NIT Calicut’, payable at State Bank of India, NIT Calicut Branch (Code No: 2207) towards Registration fee.

The attestation on the documents is to be done by a Govt. Gazetted Officer or Head of the Institution where the candidate has studied for the qualifying examination.

The print out of the online application form with the enclosures specified should reach ‘Chairperson-UG Admissions, National Institute of Technology Calicut, N.I.T.Campus P.O., Kozhikode, Kerala-673 601’, by Registered Post/Speed Post latest by 29.05.2009.

Admission will be based on the Rank obtained in the All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE-2009), conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), New Delhi.

The counselling/admission will be tentatively in July 2009. The date of counselling/admission will be notified at www.nitc.ac.in. The eligibility for counselling/admission and call letter for counselling should be downloaded from the website after login, using Application number and date of birth. No separate call letter will be despatched to applicants in this regard. Applicant will have to produce the original certificates and other documents at the time of counselling.

Those offered admission will have to remit the fees on the day of counselling failing which the offer shall be withdrawn forthwith. Tuition Fee (for 2 Semesters) is US$ 4000 (US $2000 for SAARC). Details of fee payable are given in the Prospectus.
